WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY? Psychotherapy is traditionally known as the “talking cure”. It involves a person talking about their life and the challenges that they are experiencing to a therapist. The person talks about themselves in an atmosphere that is safe, non-judgmental and confidential. The therapist encourages the person to “say everything” related to topics that can include the following: expressing present thoughts and feelings; expressing past thoughts and feelings; discussion of dreams; expressing sexual thoughts and feelings; and discussion of thoughts and feelings towards the therapist. It is up to the person and the therapist to decide what issues they will discuss ; how often they will schedule therapy sessions to work on these issues ( eg. weekly ;bi-weekly; monthly ; etc. ) ; and when psychotherapy will terminate. Individual sessions are scheduled for a 50 minute period.
